The world is yours

The world is yours (Faith no More - I started a joke EP) is my current favorite song, and it's almost 10 years old. I'm always so behind the times.

My parents are planning on coming to town this weekend, not for the holiday, not to see the grankids, but to pick up a fancy new car my mom is getting. Then they'll say hi, and drive out town.

Ok, good to see you too.

I suppose we did just hang out for a week, and have nearly had our fill of each other anyway.

The weather here has been great lately. We get a little rain, but generally nice and cool, not so hot anymore. It's like someone flipped a switch and we're instantly into fall now. I suppose it could get hot again briefly, but cooler weather is certainly on the way.

I get the feeling no one's seen this picture. It's now my favorite picture in the world.

Here's a little bit of trivia for you. I can count this picture as one of the few full family pictures we have. Can you guess how many full family pictures we have?

How about how many studio family pictures we have?

jealous again

Well, I'd heard rumors of this, but nothing really concrete. Now I actually believe the hype.

I shall now break into my standard narrative style, and give way too much background before saying what it is I'm talking about, so deal.

From 2nd grade to 9th grade, I had really 4 main friends, Ben, Brian, Samir, and Andy. We all did everything together, and mostly sports of one sort or another. Andy had been playing tennis since he was very young because his whole family played it. We all did soccer and whatever else we could do. We all tried wrestling in 8th grade, but I was the only one who stuck with it. Andy was No.1 varsity from 9th grade on. The No.2 player was Rick Stempson, and they were friends too, in fact, they were the No. 1 doubles team. Andy and I did most everything together, and were locker mates thru most of junior high. But as we got older, we hung out more primarily with people in the sports we did, so Andy and Rick hung out more, and I hung out more with friends from gymnastics nd wrestling, but we always remained good friends. I didn't stay in touch with him after high school, and recently I heard a rumor that he and Rick wrote a screenplay that actually got picked up, and was going to be turned into an honest-to-god movie, but who knows, right?

Well, I guess it's true.

So good for them. I guess it's a "based on the true story" type thing, where their coach was nothing short of a miracle worker (and I can attest to Andy telling me several times some amazing things about him) guiding them to 10 straight state titles. Which is incredible. The guy was amazing, so I suppose he should have a movie made about him. I look forward to seeing it.

Stained in Satin

Hey, nice surprise, work didn't turn out to be the insane chaotic mess I expected it to be. They're learning to get along without me. Oh wait, that's probably not so good.

Now I can turn my attention to the class I'm taking this fall, hopefully it won't be the insane time stealer that last one was.

pure morning

Well, Joe averaged almost 90mph the majority most of the way home, so we got home quite fast.

I was home by 4pm, so I had time to take a short nap, and then shower and get ready for the dog wedding. It was pretty much what I expected, just an excuse to drink. But they did in fact, have a ceremony where the dogs got married. Pictures were taken, but don't get your hopes up for anything great. This is pretty typical

love island

So we're back from the big fishing trip, which was quite successful. Lots of fish were caught, lots of beer was drank, lots of nachos were eaten, and way too much $$ was spent.

Sunday,Day 1:

Joe, Aubrey and I drive up there. Joe has a cool sprint wireless card, so we had internet access while driving. So Joe and I signed up for a cool promotion  from the poker club website I have been on for about a year now. Although it took a good 3 days, it actually worked, and I'm playing party poker with a free $50!

We arrive at the cabin at our lake, nearly the same time as Dad, and we try to fish a little that nite, but only one fish is caught, and it's small.

The next day, we had the hot-rod fishing guide, Ross take us out.

We immediately didn't like him. We thought he was supposed to show us how to catch fish on the lake we were staying on, but he took us to another lake, and we caught a lot of walleye, but they're really kind of boring.

So we caught those before lunch, and it was kind of fun, but we wanted him to show us where to catch fish on our lake, so we spent the afternoon fishing our lake, which we caught fish on, but it was much less productive.

Joe develops a man-crush for Ross, mostly because he insisted he looked like Brad Pitt.

I agreed that his profile did when wearing glasses and a hat.

But when he took his hat off he looks more like Dwight Yokum.

Joe said he looks like Brad Pitt again when he's naked, but I wouldn't know for sure.

Monday, Day 2:

We're on our own, and it shows. We cannot catch the fish like we did with Ross.

We flounder around all day, and only catch a few small fish. Now we're looking forward to Ross the "meister" taking us out again the next morning.

Tuesday, Day 3:

The meister takes us to another different lake, where it's a bass-protected lake, you can't keep anything. But this means that it's got a lot of big bass in it.

We start catching 3-5 lb smallmouth bass, right away. I can't even get a drink in between hits. It was spectacular.

So catching these was very fun for the 2 hours they were frenzy feeding.

Then it slowed down, but we had a very productive morning with the meister.

We tried again in the afternoon, but didn't have nearly the luck.

We played poker every nite, and I got much enjoyment out of driving Joe nuts with my constant blabbering, typically causing him to lose $10 a nite.

Wednesday thru Friday

Still not as good fishing without the meister, but we catch some every day, usually better luck at evening.

We sometimes go out to eat, at a local pizza place. They have a plate of nachos they pile a large pizza plate full with nacho goodness, so we had to eat there a couple times.

We finally get to the point where we are fished out, so we only fish selective times the last two days, and play some games around the cabin.

All in all, it was a very successful, but costly trip, it was great to hang out with the family men, fart, burp and swear a lot.

And generally prove the theory that the worst day fishing is still better than the best day at work.

elegantly wasted

Well, I had a fun cash game at my house last nite, and made back some of the cash I've lost at the boats recently. Only problem was I satyed up til 3am, and now I'm quite tired.

Leaving tonite for my brother's house, where we leave way too early tomorrow morning for the land of 10000 lakes, to go fishing for a week. We've done it several times, and this time, I'm bringing Aubrey along, so we'll see how he likes fishing.

So no updates for a week, when I get back and will have many great fishing stories.

Til then, go waste some time at YouTube

August 16, 2006

a life of illusion

I have no cable. It has never bothered me too much, but there are definitely some shows I like to watch, and the ones I would be most interested in are not on network TV. I've always debated the pros and cons of satellite TV, and finally the costs are coming down enough that it's starting to make sense.

Here's where I am now vs what the "local" phone company is offering

Now Windstream
20 40 TV
40 40 Phone
40 20 Internet
5 0 Long Distance
0 6 PVR
105 106 Total

So it's pretty much a wash, except I'm sure the proposed windstream price doesn't include taxes and such, and thus will be ~$10-15 more, but I'll also be getting more. So it's very tempting.

I need to ask around if anyone I know is using dish and has an opinion...

anarchy

Some things were pointed out to me that I've omitted lately.

First, Jeremey & Robyn had their latest child, a girl named Caelyn. She came out quite early, and had to be in the NICU for a while, but now is doing well, and will hopefully come home very soon.

But I have no pictures to post, so we all have to wait for that.

Ann's surgery was apparently quite traumatic. She slept the whole rest of the day, and it still quite sensitive to any light. But the jury is still out on whether it took this time or not.

August 15, 2006

darkside

Ann is going back right now to get her lasic surgery redone. The first didn't take, so now she has to go again. She is really not looking forward to it, as the first time was fairly traumatic for her. She's not reall into having her eyes pryed opened, cut and poked on. I can't imagine I am either, but my eyesight is perfectso I won't be needing any of that garbage. At least not anytime soon, I've probably just screwed myself, and karma will necessitate that I get the same in ~10 years.

Hopefully this time will fix the problem, and she'll be good to go.

August 14, 2006

the hardest button to button

I got sent a truckload of funny pictures last week, here are my two favorites.

This was titled

"My son's last day on earth"

August 13, 2006

bulletproof cupid

Yesterday I got some small bits of housework done, but I still have more today. I got the shower in and tested. Time to move on to the drywall and built in shelf building.

We had some friends come over last nite, and we played some outdoor and indoor games. It was really fun playing polish horseshoes, where you throw frisbees at beer bottles on a PVC tube.

It's really fun, we've played it a couple times this year, and this was no exception. We got some nicer heavier frisbees, and it proved to be dangerous. We had one magical hit where the frisbee hit the bottle so hard it knocked it into Aaron's head, and the bottle spilt his eyebrow. First blood in polish horseshoes!

Then we played some indoor password game, and drank heavily. It was prety fun.

I was hoping to play some cards afterwords, but no one else was interested, so we were in bed by midnite, which is quite unusual for me.

Today I have to re-caulk our shower, for about the 4th time. Each time I use a better brand of caulk but they've all starting growing nasty mold.

So here I go again.

August 11, 2006

revolution

Well, I'm trying to bring the site back to the way it was, including organizing all the photos in the gallery again, and getting our pretty family picutres up top to work right.

Still working on it.

Crazy weekend ahead. Got a friend's birthday party tonite, a big potluck dinner tomorrow, and then a week of pressure-filled work. Why pressure-filled? I have to finish some key codecs before leaving for a week long fishing trip the following week, so get it done, or no trip.

I'm not afraid.

August 10, 2006

some kind of lobotomy

Noticed any problems with the site lately?

Me too.

Turns out the place that was hosting it got their upload speed (your download speed) severely downgraded, thus, terrible sluggishness when viewing this site.

So I've been in the process of moving it yet again, this time, I'm bringing it home, so I'll have physical access to it whenever necessary.

I just got the webserver running on the new machine at home, and MT installed.

I'm just getting the blogs exported over.

Shouldn't I be working?

August 8, 2006

slang

Ok, consider yourself forwarned, mega post ahead.

First of all, you probably clearly noticed that the site was down for a couple of days. I'm sure you hardly knew what to do with yourselves without me. Well, I had updated the server, and it did update everything except apache correctly. So I spent some time tonite getting that all back in order, including beginning to transfer the website to yet another computer. At least this time it's going to be one I'll have physical access to whenever I need it.

So when was my last post? Friday? Ok, lots happened since then.
Friday nite, I cannot remember what I did. Not much, I'm sure, but it completely escapes at the moment.
(This is a spectacular start, right?)

Saturday:
It was 90+ out, and I decided to to the 12k mile service to the GS. This involves changing the fule filter, which is inside the gas tank, changing the air filter, and the spark plugs. And I had to change the oil as well.
I started around 10:30am, by 2pm, it was too hot to continue, so I went into the basement to work on the shower. I got much of the little things left done, in ~30 minutes, so I worked on bringing up kde on the new basement desktop, but didn't get very far.
BJ and Shelly came over to introduce their dog to ours, as they were going to watch our dog while we went to Adventureland. BJ also needed me to look at his cdrom, which was quite dead. We talked about the shower for a while and how to get the spark plugs out of the GS, because I had managed to get a bunch of rocks down in the tube, which was a pain.

After they left, I finished the GS servicing, and decided I needed to change the oil in the vehicles too, especially the van before we left, as I realized it was overdue.

So off I went to Wallyworld to get filters and oil. Of course, I'm a terrible person to send to that store, because I just start getting anything that tickles my fancy, so I got 3 bottles of booze, tonic water, and milk.

Then I changed the vehicles oil and filters, and it was getting dark. I finished up, went inside showered, and packed my stuff for leaving the next day.

Sunday.
Got up, went to church, and went home. We packed up the van, and took off around 2:30pm, got to Des Moines around 5:30pm. I took my trusty new hotrod GPS
Garmin 60Cx
with my newly loaded mapping software. It was not the latest and greatest mapping software, it was just what I was able to get ahold of quickly. But it seemed to work pretty good as I had used it here and as we travelled out there. I made several navigational blunders that the GPS helped me discover quickly.

We checked into out hotel and called Jerry and Vonna, whom we wer planning on meeting for dinner. He gave me directions to a place called Claxtons, a barBque place. We were meeting his kids there too.
We actually managed to find the place as a Point of Interest (POI) on the GPS, and I followed the GPS's directions, which led me back to the interstate. I got about 10 miles outside of Des Moines when I thought, "there's no way this can be right" even though the icon on the GPS map is clearly showing me heading towards it. I call Jerry again, and he gives me brief instructions on how to get there, which primarily are based on turning around. I get back to the main street he told me to look for, and now what he said and the GPS are actually in sync. We get to the GPS's destination, and nothing. I see several things, and grocery store, gas station, and 2 strip malls, but it is noticely missing any restuarants, and nothing called Claxton's. So I start driving behind strip malls and grocery stores, while Ann calls the place and gets their address, which it turns out to be about 20 blocks from what the GPS had. So my not entirely-up-to-date GPS POI info didn't know that Claxton's had just moved down the street a couple months ago.
Nice.
So we're 20 mintues later than anyone else because of my hotrod new navigational equipment.

I order a green chile pulled pork sanwich, Aburey orders a rack of ribs, and Ann gets fish. I didn't like our waitress right from the start, she wouldn't even walk over to my side of the table when I ordered anything or asked any questions. The girls were very hungry, and we ordered appetizers, but Ally didn't like any of them, so had to sit hungry until the food showed up. The appetizers got there in ~10 minutes, which seemed reasonable, but the food took 45 minutes. We saw the waitress several times, and we asked several times about our order, and no real info was given. When it got there, over half the items were either cooked wrong, or flat out stone cold. We griped, and got 3 new sandwiches in < 5 minutes, which made me think, "If that's all the longer it takes to make these, what took so long the first time?"
At the end of the meal, the tickets came out, and everything was full price, no acknowledgment of how late everything was. This sparked everyone up, most notably all the Des Moines Hall girls. All three of them marched up and asked to speak to the manager, which was apparently was a situation Jerry had been in before, because he ran outside and pretended he didn't know us anymore.
Vonna (his wife) explained that we were trying to haave a nice meal, and our waitress sucked, and the meal was very late, and cold, etc, etc.
He said "give me your tickets and I'l adjust them for you", at which point I've said nothing, but shot my $60 bill up there to be adjusted too.
Suddenly, it came back from behind me, as it had been stealthily dropped off at the table while we were still standing there waiting for this guy to come back. Ann came up and gave it to me, and said "here's the new bill" which was $36.
Ok, $25 off, better than nothing.
Now Brianne and Jessica demanded to see the manager and they really started in on him. I didn't really even hear everything, but I caught a lot of "I've been working food service for years, and she has too, and there is no way this level of service is accetable, and another thing..."
I kindof looked around expecting to see the cops show up.
Suddenly the manager throws his arms up in exaspertation, and says "Fine!" and turns around and walks off. Brianne, who .5 seconds before was less than 6 inches from this guy's face, little bits of angry spittle flying on him as she tore into him, suddenly turned around to me, smiled, and said "let's go, it's all taken care of"
"Mine too?" I asked
"Yes. Let's go"

I thought we were going to be shot.

We said our goodbyes, and went back to our hotel, which it turns out was about 300 feet away, and I drove about 30 miles to get there.

The kids spent the next several hours swimming, and I didn't have a suit with me, so I went to the casino that was about 100 yards away, and played some $1-2 NL, but I caught no hands that connected with anything, and got blinded out way too much money so I quit.

Monday
11 solid hours of Adventureland.
You can do most everything there in about 4 hours. So the next 7 hours are doing your favorite things over and over and over.
The girls rode a few roller coasters at Disneyland (oh yeah, we went there too, a mere 4 months ago, we're vacationing fools), but weren't real sure how much they liked them at that time.
Last year, they were too short to ride many of the rides at Adventureland, but this year, they could do most of the rides.
We did the tornado first, and Ann said she'd do it too, so each of the girls would have someone to sit with. Ann hates roller coasters. She actually started crying on the way up, she was dreading it so much. That's a good way to put the kid your sitting with at ease. I couldn't believe Abby, who was sitting with her, didn't start freaking out too.
But by the end of the ride, Ann had calmed down, or had it scared out of her, and the girls loved it. From that point on, all they wanted to do was roller coasters, including the big steel one they have that has two loops, that was their favorite. We must have rode that one 8-10 times. It got to the point where I had had enough of it.
Finally, it was park closing time, and we made our way home. 3 hours later, and I was at home in my bed.

I'm a wanker

Since Dave can't post this without trouble, I found it, and loved it.

I was born in the wrong decade.

August 3, 2006

hi, my name is

So I've decided to make a big change at home. My main desktop at home got another virus, a fairly common problem with windoze machines when constantly using p2p software. So I've decided to move it completely over to linux, as there's nothing that I can't do on it as well, and linux has almost no viruses written for it. It's MS that has all the security holes.

So I put a lot of thought into the kinds of apps I would miss, ie, apps I use that have no linux ports.

One of the big ones was w.bloggar. I use the crap out of it, and it's windoze only.

So what did that mean?

(This is where those who also post on this webserver (DAVE), will actually be interested)

I found, downloaded, and configured a WYSIWYG editor in the web entry interface. Now, I don't need w.bloggar anymore, and my transition to linux will be painless, I won't miss anything.

you wait...

I got my first response to my bike ad on craigslist

From: Torismagichands@aol.com
This might be way far fetched and out there, but it's craig's list and I've had a lot of luck before so I figured, why not give it a shot.
I'm Victoria a 26 year female with automotive and some motorcycle experience. Currently I am in Pennsylvania, but I am very interested in moving to the Lincoln area. Would you happen to know any local shops in the area that I could contact that maybe looking for help? If you do I would really appreciate.
Oh yeah I'm not just a mechanic with tools, I also do massage:)
thanks for any help you can give, I appreciate it.

I don't care if it's real or not, either way it's hilarious.

August 1, 2006

Maybe you're crazy

So my cousin Katie graduated from her "college" last year, and has been working at good ol' State Farm ever since. Now with some new-found cash in hand, she has apparently gone insane.
She has sent out formal invitations for the wedding of her dog and her best friend's dog.
That's right, formal invitations for a dog wedding.

The only thing sadder? I'll probably go.

over now

Yesterday was a hectic day. We went to Gary's funeral in the morning. It was a tear-jerker, as expected.
It was nasty hot, so I debated even going to work, rather just work from home. But then Ann reminded me that my hotrod new GPS was going to arrive at work today, so I went in.
By the way global warming freakers, eat it.
So the GPS arrived, but of course, they didn't send the cigarette lighter power cord, so it's kindof useless for the bike right now.

I came home a little early, and my plumber friend Ryan came over and we finally finished the water in the bathroom.
It took ~5 hours, but all the stuff I wasn't comfortable doing is done.

The bathroom now has water! Hallelujah!!!
I will finally be able to move on to the next phase of this project, I can hardly believe it!

After Ryan left, I filled up the honda's newly cleaned gas tank with fresh gas, and it fired right up. It still could be tuned better, but it's running, and officially for sale. Come and get it.
